Khurnaz

"They say Khurnaz is technically a Dwarven word. Khurn means 'Weasel' and '-az' is a suffix that turns a word into an adjective. You don't really have to guess what the Dwarves thought of them."

Lore

Khurnaz are a race of feline humanoids that are common throughout the Eastern and Western Sulgate. They are, generally, smaller than humans. Their native language is a strange mixture of Ko-man, Dwarven and Archiac Elven, which prevents most of what they speak from being understood by anyone who does not speak the other dialects and even individual tribes can have difficulty communicating upon first contact, though they can learn to speak the languages of their neighbors they are almost universally illiterate, though sometimes learn to memorize particular words or symbols common on signs or architecture.

As a people, they are mostly tribal, hailing from the desert and jungle regions of the Sulgate, freely crossing between the lands of multiple countries. Khurnaz tribes are mostly nomadic and traveling in small clans, their people have a reputation in regions they pass through - deservedly - for playful curiosity and thievery, though they tend to share anything they have readily with others in their social circles and are not particularly possessive of wealth.

It is important to note that while Khurnaz can be incredibly accepting of other cultures, they are also incredibly proud and competitive. Some Khurnaz tribal leaders are often easily offended, and because of this, sometimes drive out members of their tribes who have difficulty accepting the status quo when they see useful or interesting perspectives from other cultures  -- these individuals often become 'adventurers' who attempt to learn, adopt or "borrow" objects and methods from the ways of cultures they pass through in their travels.

Quirks

  • Khurnaz are universally a meat-eating predatory species.

  • Given the Orcrest region is so far from the Sulgate region, it is important for a Khurnaz character's player to have an understanding of the regions and cultures they come from, as well as the other races and cultures of the region. A Khurnaz character should have an appreciation for the distances involved, and a relatable story for how their character arrived in the region.

  • Because of their primitive nature and impatient natures, Khurnaz, while clever, rarely have the willingness to sit down and learn to create or craft things for themselves, typically gaining their possessions through trade or theft. Crafting feats are generally discouraged. Khurnaz, as a rule, are generally illiterate, even if they speak multiple languages.

  • Khurnaz have a very liberal views when it comes to the personal space, territory or property of other peoples, and will typically just pick up and carry off things they find interesting before casually trading, selling or discarding the object later.

  • Khurnaz are not biologically compatible with any other mortal or plane-touched species available on Orcrest though a few eccentric nobles of Harakht and other wealthy individuals sometimes keep at least one in their harems.

  • Khurnaz are not biologically compatible with any other mortal or plane-touched species available on Orcrest though a few eccentric nobles of Harakht and other wealthy individuals sometimes keep at least one in their harems.

  • While no mortal species are genetically compatible with them, it is important to note that true extraplanar-immortal entities do not obey the laws of physics or biology when reproducing.

  • Khurnaz generally have dark fur colors. "Furry" avatars with large heads and cartoony eyes or bright colors will not be accepted. This will be strictly enforced. This is not a fursona - it is a chance to play something alien and inhuman.

  • Khurnaz characters must be at least 18-years-old on Beyond Orcrest, making them close to middle-aged.
