Rule 13: What is a "Fade to Black"?

"Fade to Black" is a "Fast Forward" button for those who do not wish (for whatever reason) to play out an intense, or uncomfortable, or even a mundane RP scene. What 'Fade to black' IS NOT.. is it IS NOT A WAY TO PREVENT SOMETHING FROM HAPPENING TO YOUR CHARACTER. Fade to Black is there to prevent fetishists from getting the pay-off of making other people uncomfortable. It is not there to protect YOU, THE PLAYER, NOT your character.

If you're fine RPing out a scene, and your partner(s are) fine RPing out the scene? Feel free. Enjoy yourself. But if you're uncomfortable, Fade to Black is there to compromise. Below is a correct, and incorrect use of 'Fade to Black'.

An Appropriate Use of Fade to Black:

  •  Bandit unbuckling his belt advancing on young maiden chained by the ankle in a dungeon cell.

  •  Maiden begins screaming, begging, pulling at her chain.

  •  Fade to Black is called by Maiden's player because she doesn't want to play out a scene that makes her uncomfortable.

  • The Next Scene begins with the bandit leaving the Dungeon Cell, buckling up his belt.

  • Maiden is visibly shaken and upset, and can later tell IC authorities about the event that was not roleplayed out in detail.

An Inappropriate Use of Fade To Black:

  • Bandit unbuckling his belt advancing on young maiden chained by the ankle in a dungeon cell.

  • Player OOCly screams, starts bad-talking the bandit's player to other people, leaves sim, logs out.

  • Logs back in a few days later in another location and refuses to acknowledge the RP of being captured by a group in the first place.

  • This player falsely assumes she is covered by Rule 13's 'Fade to Black' when she's guilty of breaking Rule 6 (God-moding, Cheating out of a Dungeon Cell, etc.) and under Rule 7 (Harassment) and Rule 10 (Rumor-mongering).

The important thing to notice between these two is that being OOCly offended is not grounds to break other rules. Fade to Black does not exist to protect your character. It exists to reduce OOC tension and to protect people from having to play out detailed scenes they may have personal trauma or other issues related to events in RP.

Fade to Black is a compromise.. but remember that Fade to Black requires you too, to compromise with another player through communication.
